Bought this Elkay 'E-granite' sink from AMZ for a premium (vs. purchasing from a 3rd party AMZ seller) because I trust Amazon's return policy & Elkay is as well respected sink manufacturer.
The sink arrived seemingly in perfect condition as the packaging is quite substantial. Anyway, after a quick glance inside to read the installation info, I thought the sink was fine despite being pretty dirty with a heavy coat of powdery white dust (probably can be attributed to the mfg process). Upon completely unpacking the sink and all set to install, I noticed that the sink had hairline cracks in opposite corners of the sink. Thankfully, about two minutes on the AMZ website and I had a return all setup. UPS showed up the next day and picked up the sink free of charge.
As for the sink itself, the pros are:
1) Such an affordable price. On par with the Pegasus brand but, this is an Elkay. Pegasus is just Home Depot's private label. From my knowledge of Elkay, they are a top quality Stainless Steel sink manufacturer. In fact, I've been bugging a buddy of mine who works for Elkay about granite sinks for some time and just now see this on the market.
2) Standard sink dimensions easily replaces cheap sinks that come in most new homes
3) High quality material. The sink's thickness is impressive & it has some significant weight to it (that's good for noise reduction as well)
Cons:
1) It's quite possible you might experience a mfg defect like I did. Elkay made their name with high quality stainless steel sinks. Not granite material. I think they're still new to the mfg process and possibly do not make these themselves.
2) The design is quite plain. Nothing special about it. The aforementioned Pegasus brand offers quite a bit of designs despite being made of a cheaper feeling material
3) The granite seems very porous. Meaning that it's more likely to absorb things and discolor. btw, remember to be very careful using plumber's putty when installing a black granite sink or go ahead and use a high quality silicon when installing the flanges.
Overall, I really wish this sink would have worked out. In lieu, I ran out the same day of my sink install & spent exactly the same amount on a lesser quality Pegasus sink. If you're in the market for a black granite sink, give this one a try. Just remember to buy from Amazon (as the seller) to avoid potential return issues. That and if you're doing so much work under the sink, now is the time to buy a new garbage disposer. InSinkErator makes several 'Evolution' models which work great. In the long run, you'll be happy you spent a little extra up front.
