InSinkErator STS-SO Single Outlet Sink Top Switch with Chrome, Satin Nickel and White Buttons Review

InSinkErator STS-SO Single Outlet Sink Top Switch with Chrome, Satin Nickel and White Buttons
Average Reviews:

I should have purchased this a long time ago. It works great, and is as simple as: Screw the button into an unused hole in your sink, plug the power module into a standard outlet for your disposal, plug the disposal into the power module, and connect a simple plug-in airline from the button to the power module. All in all, less than 3 minutes to install. Note that you do need to have an unused hole in your sink to mount it. If you wanted to wall-mount it, you'll need to come up with some mechanism to do so as there isn't any rough-in kit included to add the button to a 1-gang or 2-gang electrical box.
It's a little pricey, but if you're ok with the price you'll be very happy with the product.

Titan T-1060 1¼ HP Premium Food Waste Disposer Review

Titan T-1060 1ΒΌ HP Premium Food Waste Disposer
Average Reviews:

If there was an option to select "zero stars" for this product, I would have done so.
We had installed (by a professional plumber) the SECOND Titan 1-1/4 HP food waste disposer. The second one did the same thing as the first--after just several usages, one of the blades came loose inside the disposer--it sounded like a spoon had fallen inside the disposer. It was grinding a lemon wedge when this happened.
Two times is enough--we won't purchase another Titan. Each installation resulted in an expensive plumber fee. Please don't waste your money on this product.
Hope this review will save you the headaches we have endured with this product.

Broan 15" Trash Compactor - Stainless Steel Door 15SS Review

Broan 15 Trash Compactor - Stainless Steel Door 15SS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm copying and pasting the review I used at Home Depot, because that is where I bought this compactor. However, I spent a lot of time on this review, and I love buying stuff on Amazon too, so I decided to also put my review here. The exact model I have is the black 15" Elite model, but I'm sure this review applies to just about any of their 15" elite models.
My unit arrived slightly defective. The hold feature doesn't work. So far, I've had a repair guy out three times, and he still has a part on order to try to fix it. Fortunately, the compactor works in normal mode, so this hasn't prevented me from using it. (One other switch broke within the first week, but the repair man was able to fix this on his second visit. So it was only out of commission for about a week.)
The good news is that Broan has been very nice and helpful, and has paid for all of the service visits. So, you can have confidence in their 1-year warranty, and if you get unlucky like me at least you don't have to pay for repairs. With any luck, yours will simply work right out of the box!
Because of these warranty issues I've had to deal with, I can't give this a 5-star review. If it arrived in perfect working order, I would have been happy to give it 5-stars.
But I can still confidently give it 4-stars. I love this compactor. I'll list the positives, and then address some of the negatives I've read about it in other reviews:
Positives:
Excellent horse power. This unit crushes glass bottles with ease. In fact, it is so powerful that I decided to stop crushing my glass to a pulp. Now, I use the first glass bottle "popping" as the sign that my trash is full, and I take it out to the can. By doing so, this has been a great indication of when it has compacted enough for my tastes. (I haven't even come close to overworking this thing).
It looks stylish. I love the black color, and it matches the rest of my appliances. As a free standing unit, it looks great and gets the job done.
Excellent capacity. We can fit three days worth of garbage in this thing, including gallon milk jugs, formula containers, etc. (I have two very small kids. We were going through a full kitchen sized bag every day.) I was having trouble fitting all of the trash small kids can generate in a week (diapers, formula containers, milk containers, etc. etc.) in the single curbside receptacle. Now it is very easy. Two of these bags per week is about our new average. That is amazing. I think we are getting about a 4:1 compression ratio, which I think is great.
Addressing some unfounded criticism:
This unit, freestanding, does indeed tip forward. BUT, once you install the inexpensive front kick plate ($15), this problem goes away. The user manual makes it painfully clear that for a freestanding installation you MUST use this kick plate. This trash compactor has been rock solid ever since I installed that kick plate. I can't get it to tip forward very easily even when I push down on it. Yes, it was very annoying to have to order a second part that I feel should have come with the unit, but I'm not going to knock off any stars over it. Now that I've added this item, I'm over any annoyance I had from needing to place a second order. (I did actually order this kick plate from Amazon, as it turns out.)
Trash bags are expensive. Yes, they are. BUT, the generic compactor bags that are sold at Wal-Mart work just fine, if you stretch them just a bit. Oh sure, the company warns you against doing so, but seriously, it is a plastic bag. For about a quarter of the cost, I'm happy to make do with an off-brand bag. Their official bags are great, and easy to use. I just wish they were more affordable. However, the workaround is so easy, I can't really consider this a legitimate downside. I've even considered using Glad Forceflex bags, which I'm sure would work.
Not enough compacting power? One review said that stepping on trash would work just as well. This isn't true at all. I certainly can't crush wine bottles just by stepping on them, but this trash compactor laughs at glass bottles. I have to empty the trash as soon as I hear glass breaking, or the compactor would turn them back into the sand from which they came. PLENTY of horsepower. It was very difficult for me to fit all of our garbage into one trash can every week, but now it is easy. (And before I had this unit, I was OF COURSE standing on the trash can smashing it down with my body weight. No way I could do as good of a job, not to mention how silly I looked.)
Legitimate complaints: It really isn't as convenient to throw stuff away as with a normal kitchen trash can. You have to open the door, pull out the drawer, and make sure your kids aren't going to tackle you when you are bent over. (Happened to me once, I scraped my arm.) Also, there is no way I want my kids throwing stuff away in here until they get older.
However, my wife and I worked around this minor inconvenience very easily by buying a small trash can (bathroom sized) and placing it nearby. Our daughter knows that this is "her" trash can, and as it fills up we can throw the little bag inside the compactor. This solution actually worked so well that even we tend to use the little can out of convenience. Then you get the best of both worlds, and you can contain organic items in a smaller bag to be compacted later. Works great, and now that we are doing so I don't even consider the compactor to be a hassle. The usefulness more than overcomes any potential inconvenience caused by needing to open a door and slide out a bin.
Oh, and if I haven't mentioned it yet: this thing is FUN. Maybe it is because I'm a guy, but smashing things is kind of satisfying. You feel like your kitchen is that much cleaner. And my little daughter loves watching it go. She runs into the kitchen every time I hit the button to watch the light change from red to green (and she laughs if something pops).
I recommend buying one if you need to smash trash. Like I said, I would easily have given it 5-stars if I wasn't dealing with warranty issues.

InSinkErator CRD-00 Power Cord Kit Review

InSinkErator CRD-00 Power Cord Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
InSinkErator Power Cord Kit #CRD-00
This cord kit will work with any brand/model of disposer.
InSinkErator disposers do not include a cord in the box because many installers will choose to use non-metallic (NM) sheathed cable (e.g., Romex® brand) hard-wired directly to the disposer. If a power cord was included, those customers would be paying for a cord they didn't need.
If the disposer won't be hard-wired, connect this power cord kit to the disposer, and plug the cord into a receptacle inside the sink-base cabinet.
If there is no receptacle there, you can:
a) hire an electrician to install one
b) obtain a homeowner electrical permit from your local government, do it yourself, and have it inspected
c) do it yourself without a permit (a violation in most jurisdictions)
Since many homeowner's will choose "c", here are some suggestions for installing a new receptacle inside the sink-base cabinet:
- turn the power for the disposer circuit off at the main panel;
- feed the disposer's existing NM cable coming from the wall into the rear of a steel surface mounted utility (or recessed) electric box. Remove a knock-out from the steel box and install a 3/8" connector to protect the cable.
- The National Electric Code(NEC) requires a box for a disposer to be "accessible"; it cannot be hidden, such as behind the dishwasher.
- secure the bare ground wire from the NM cable to the steel box with a machine screw used for no other purpose, and to the grounding terminal on the receptacle.
- secure the white wire to the receptacle's silver terminal and the black wire to the gold terminal.
- turn the power on and use a receptacle tester (sold by Amazon & others) to verify proper receptacle wiring.
Many flat electric cords like this one do not have color coded hot and neutral wires (usually black and white respectively). With this SPECIFIC cord:
- the neutral and hot wires are both black;
- the neutral wire's insulation is ribbed for identification; connect it to the white wire from the disposer;
- attach the un-ribbed wire to the disposer's black wire;
- attach the green wire to the ground screw in the disposer's built-in electric "box".
Any flexible three-wire cord could be used for a disposer, as long as it meets specific rules for insulation thickness, moisture resistance, proper gauge, and cord length (18" to 36"). This cord meets Underwriter's Laboratory and National Electrical Code standards.
I found the two included wire-nuts to be too small and used larger wire-nuts from my stock. One star off for that. Other than that, this cord kit is just fine.

Cover Control Adapter Review

Cover Control Adapter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to install a garbage disposer in my new home, but there was no switched outlet or circuit to attach the garbage disposer to - only a regular outlet. I purchased this adapter along with the InSinkErator Evolution Compact disposer (one of a few disposers that fit my limited height requirements) so that I could operate the disposer without having to add a wall switch.
The adapter works well; it comes with a special flange and a special black plastic magnetic drain stopper / control. The only complaint that I would offer is that the black plastic stopper is not as attractive as the stainless steel stoppers that many newer disposers come with, and that you have to push it in rather firmly (and upside down) to stop up the drain completely when you want to fill the sink.
There is a dearth of technical information about the product online. The InSinkErator website doesn't even mention it. It is very easy to install (clips onto the fairly standard quick-mount screws) and just wires between the incoming hot power wire and the hot terminal / wire on the disposer. The adapter comes with a alternative, round backup flange. I used this, but if I ever did an install again, I think I'd try first with the standard triangular backup flange that comes with most disposers. This adapter is listed to work with any Evolution series disposer, but I am 99% sure that it would work with any InSinkErator disposer (including the much cheaper Badger series) as well as many other manufacturers disposers that use the fairly standard three screw quick-mount systems.

Disposer Care Review

Disposer Care
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As far as the lemon scent goes I've never smelled any lemon and I have a really sensitive nose. In that regard I can also tell you that the Summit Disposer Care does a really good job of cleaning out the disposer! Usually when I read biodegradable or something similar it typically means it does a terrible job at doing what it should be doing, but I can assure that is not the case here. One caution I do have is that this is NOT an item that should sit on a shelf for a long time as the packets do harden and their effectiveness seems to lessen somewhat, as well as making it far harder to get them into your disposer. That seems to be typical for most of these disposer products yet none of the packaging mentions timeframes they should be used within. At any rate, use these rather than storing them and you should be quite pleased!
